Moffitt’s Wife, Sister-In-Law Are Punished

Friday, January 25th, 2008

TAMPA – Sheree Ellis, the sister-in-law of University of South Florida linebacker Ben Moffitt, received a letter of reprimand from Wildwood Elementary principal Dana Williams after she told The Tampa Tribune she wrote papers for Moffitt, Sumter County superintendent Richard Shirley said.

Ellis, a Wildwood Elementary teacher, also told the Tribune she filled out paperwork indicating Moffitt had visited her classroom as required for his Intro to Education and Field Experience class, although he never actually attended.

“You’re talking about someone that is a relatively young teacher and got caught up in the moment and didn’t use the best judgment,” Shirley said.

Moffitt’s wife, Shauna Moffitt, was docked 10 hours of pay by the Sumter County Property Appraiser’s Office for the time she said she spent doing her husband’s schoolwork while at work, said a Sumter County spokeswoman.

Moffitt, who has an annual salary of $34,918, will be docked $167.20 divided between two paychecks, the spokeswoman said.

Moffitt told the Tribune she wrote nearly every paper for her husband during his five years at USF and e-mailed the Tribune six assignments she said she did while at work.

USF burglaries dropped nearly in half, report shows still 529% more than other FL school.

Monday, January 21st, 2008

USF has 529% more burglaries and 686% more motor vehicle thefts than it’s neighbor to the east UCF.

Although USF’s burglary rate has decreased between 2005 and 2006 – from 208 to 111 – it is still in the lead. “The area we’re in plays a part. Most offenders are not affiliated with the University,” she said. USF has not changed its jurisdiction or ways of crime reporting and responding.

In motor vehicle theft, USF leads with 48 thefts while UCF reported 7. These statistics include golf carts, which constitutes as grand theft auto if stolen. “Students do not realize that when they go for a joy ride in a golf cart that isn’t theirs, they’re stealing,” said Ross.

USF football star is object of warrants in multiple counties

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

South Florida standout Brian Fisher has warrants for his arrest in Escambia and Hillsborough counties, both stemming from delinquent child support to two women.

However, South Florida coach Jim Leavitt said Fisher is working to pay his obligations and as a result might redshirt this season.

“I know he’s working (a job). I know he’s trying to work to resolve his responsibilities,” Leavitt said. “If he can’t get it all done, we’ll redshirt him this fall to give him more time to get things in order.”

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Highly rated USF recruit Leslie Stirrups fails to qualify and commits felonies.
The news reported in Tuesday’s Times that former Hillsborough High lineman Leslie Stirrups had been arrested and charged with six felonies brought a range of responses from fans — frustration, disappointment, disbelief.

I caught the arrest late enough Monday night that I wasn’t able to get a lot of details beyond the basic charges. In short, police say Stirrups stole digital cameras worth about $300 each and other small items from cars parked in the parking lot near Tampa International Airport where he and his mother worked.

Three players fail repeated drug tests

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

After a nightmare of an off-season filled with off-field player issues and recruits failing to qualify, Leavitt and his Bulls could be pushed out the door of the championship room of which he was speaking.

From quarterback Carlton Hill’s roller-coaster spring in the classroom and his arrest in a dorm room to three players – Jackie Chambers, Josh Julmiste and Ricky Ponton – failing a second drug test, Leavitt couldn’t have imagined a worst-case scenario for his team

But when does Leavitt make a statement to his players or become accountable for these actions? Why hasn’t Leavitt, who is known as a disciplinarian, used an iron fist with these troublesome players?
