Former USF Basketball player shot and arrested by Federal Marshall

Monday, October 20th, 2008

TAMPA — A former University of South Florida basketball player was shot Thursday by a deputy U.S. marshal serving a drug-related warrant.

David Christopher Sills, 26, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital after the 11:30 a.m. incident, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Jim Madden said.

Sills was shot in the torso, but his injuries were not life-threatening, Madden said. He was booked into the Orient Road Jail about 4 p.m. Friday, after being treated at St. Joseph’s. He is being held without bail.

A police report at the time indicated that he shoved a USF parking patroller who was placing a boot on his car in the parking lot adjacent to the Bulls’ basketball arena. Officers said they found marijuana in his impounded car.

A former junior point guard for the USF Bulls, Sills was dismissed from the team in 2005, with then-coach Robert McCullum citing Sills’ poor attitude and behavior. Sills studied communications at USF for two semesters, from May until December 2005, and left without graduating, USF spokeswoman Lara Wade said.

Sills’ most recent arrest came in January, when he was charged with trafficking in cocaine. Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said a warrant had been issued for Sills’ arrest after he sold cocaine to an undercover officer in November.

On Thursday, when the shooting occurred, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was serving a TPD-originated warrant for failure to appear in court on those charges, McElroy said.

USF Student Pleads Guilty to Terrorist Aid

Monday, July 21st, 2008

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – An Egyptian college student pleaded guilty Wednesday to making a video demonstrating how to build a remote bomb detonator to help terrorists kill enemies including American soldiers.

Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, 26, one of two University of South Florida students arrested after a South Carolina traffic stop in August, pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in September.

The arrests perpetuated the Tampa university’s reputation as “Jihad U,” a nickname coined after an Egyptian professor, Sami Al-Arian, was charged with raising money for terrorist attacks by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. He pleaded guilty to one count of providing support to terrorists and is in jail awaiting deportation.

USF’s Ford earns Big East academic accolade after missing classes and committing felonies

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The Big East released its football All-Academic honors on Thursday, and it’s a strange thing when a conference can celebrate roughly 10 percent of its football players garnering a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average or higher.

Seven Bulls made the list, including three former or current walk-ons. Two seniors — quarterback Anthony Severino and cornerback Ryan Gilliam — were honored, as well as junior receiver Marcus Edwards. Two sophomores — long-snapper Eric Setser and kicker/punter Delbert Alvarado — made the list, as well as redshirt freshman tackle Jacob Sims and freshman running back Mike Ford. ——-

FORT LAUDERDALE – USF nearly fumbled it all away.

Playing without leading rusher Mike Ford, who was held out after missing classes, USF still rushed for 257 yards in the second half, finishing with 302 as a team, the Bulls’ highest total since the 2005 season.

USF Student makes video for Muslims to “defend themselves against the infidels invading their country, including U.S. military forces.”

Monday, February 4th, 2008

However, the report does not explain a 12-minute videotape allegedly produced by Mohamed that features an Arabic-speaking man explaining how to convert remote-controlled vehicles into a detonator.  The FBI says Mohamed made the video to help people “defend themselves against the infidels invading their country, including U.S. military forces.”

During their arrests, Mohamed told authorities the items in their trunk were sugar rockets and they were going to set them off in a field.

USF burglaries dropped nearly in half, report shows still 529% more than other FL school.

Monday, January 21st, 2008

USF has 529% more burglaries and 686% more motor vehicle thefts than it’s neighbor to the east UCF.

Although USF’s burglary rate has decreased between 2005 and 2006 – from 208 to 111 – it is still in the lead. “The area we’re in plays a part. Most offenders are not affiliated with the University,” she said. USF has not changed its jurisdiction or ways of crime reporting and responding.

In motor vehicle theft, USF leads with 48 thefts while UCF reported 7. These statistics include golf carts, which constitutes as grand theft auto if stolen. “Students do not realize that when they go for a joy ride in a golf cart that isn’t theirs, they’re stealing,” said Ross.

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Highly rated USF recruit Leslie Stirrups fails to qualify and commits felonies.
The news reported in Tuesday’s Times that former Hillsborough High lineman Leslie Stirrups had been arrested and charged with six felonies brought a range of responses from fans — frustration, disappointment, disbelief.

I caught the arrest late enough Monday night that I wasn’t able to get a lot of details beyond the basic charges. In short, police say Stirrups stole digital cameras worth about $300 each and other small items from cars parked in the parking lot near Tampa International Airport where he and his mother worked.
